Hadn’t seen Rian in years, and it was very good indeed to catch up for fifteen or twenty minutes before the requirements of actually launching his book caught up. I left him in the clutches of journalists, bumping into David Hine by complete chance on the way out. I provided a quote for his last book, the wonderful BULLETPROOF COFFIN. He told me all kinds of interesting things that I don’t think are cleared for public knowledge yet. By which I mean comics projects, not, you know, the truth about UFOs or something.
Rian Hughes’ new book, CULT-URE, is remarkable.
I’m only partway into it, and so absolutely fascinated that I’m deliberately taking it slowly. There are previews at this link here, and at cult-ure.net (beware: Flash site).
Rian once draw Dan Dare being arseraped by the Mekon and got paid for it. (But that was really Grant Morrison’s fault.)
This image was sneakily taken by Anna Petterson at lunch today. Anna’s a bookstore manager and one of the organisers of Comic Village at the London MCM Expo conventions. I have to check my schedule, but I will maybe pop along for an hour at the next one, in May. (Just got email from previous organiser Emma Vieceli saying "hey I hear you’re coming to MCM." SO I GUESS ANNA DECIDED ALREADY. Bloody Swedes. You can’t trust them.)
(The bit I really like about MCM is going out to dinner with Anna and Emma and Emma’s husband Pud anyway.) (Which makes me wonder why we don’t do it more often, for that matter.)
Anyway, despite the fact that ANNA HAS APPARENTLY ALREADY DECIDED FOR ME GRRR, I will check my schedule and confirm here if I’m attending in May. Which, let’s face it, I probably am. I’ll probably be signing on the Saturday only, for an hour or two, and then seeing my friends.
I am currently loving the cosmic trance goodness of both of the albums at Inner Islands’ bandcamp page. And am about to give them some money.
I also love Afua Richardson’s sketch work:
Back to work. I have to try and solve some problems relating to webcomics. There will be actual content here soon, I promise.
